Hampi: A Journey into India's Glorious Past

Just a few months ago, the name "Hampi" was a mystery to me. But as fate would have it, a long weekend presented the perfect opportunity to embark on a journey that would soon leave me utterly captivated. This trip not only introduced me to a place of incredible historical significance but also ignited my passion for history. Let me share my incredible experience in this charming village with you.

 

A Serendipitous Decision

With no prior knowledge of Hampi, I found myself with a long weekend to spare. I decided to embark on an adventure to this place, albeit with minimal research on hand. Before setting off, I delved into the rich history of Hampi, and what I discovered left me truly impressed.

Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, once thrived as the heart of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the oldest and most significant empires in India's history. My excitement surged as I came across an enthralling Spotify podcast series that unraveled the entire history of this incredible place. I eagerly completed the series, soaking in every bit of knowledge.

The Journey Begins

I booked a train from Bangalore to Hospet, the nearest railway station to Hampi, for a four-day getaway. However, I still had to figure out my accommodation as I hadn't made any prior reservations. Stepping off the train in Hospet, I soon found myself in the company of a lively gang from Kerala who were also on a quest to find a place to stay. 

My intuition led me to choose the path less traveled, the enigmatic Hippie Island. Having heard of a cozy homestay on the island, I set off to explore. The place was almost full, but I decided to take a chance and talk to the owner. With a smile, she agreed to let me stay on the floor – a small sacrifice for the chance to experience the magic of Hampi.

 History Unveiled

For a history lover like me, Hampi turned out to be a treasure trove of historical wonders. The village is steeped in legends and is connected to the ancient tales of Ramayana, Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Ram-Sita. Hampi sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, which serves as the natural divide between North and South Hampi.

The majority of the must-visit places are in South Hampi, including the iconic Virupaksha Temple, the awe-inspiring Narsimha statue, the serene Ganpati shrine, the splendid Vittala Temple, and the remarkable Elephant Stable.

For those who venture to the North, there's the charming Sanapur Lake, a spot for thrilling cliff jumping, and the stunning mountains that offer the perfect vantage points for unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. Don't forget to explore the excellent cafes for some well-deserved relaxation.

A Solo Sojourn with Serendipity

My solo journey through Hampi introduced me to a tapestry of experiences. I met countless people, engaged in fascinating conversations, shared late-night bonfires, and even found myself indulging in some daring escapades.

To make the most of your Hampi adventure, renting a bike is a must. With three days, you can easily cover all the highlights. Don't miss the opportunity to try coracle riding on the serene lake, and make it a point to spend your evenings watching the sun paint the rocky landscape with its golden hues, while the mornings reveal the charm of the paddy fields.

Hampi is not just a destination; it's a journey through time, culture, and the unexpected. My visit was a symphony of history, adventure, and serendipity, and I hope that if you ever find yourself with a long weekend and a sense of wanderlust, you'll consider setting your course for the enchanting village of Hampi.
